What is the NEPSE index?

The NEPSE index is the Nepal Stock Exchange's main market index: it tracks the combined market value of all listed ordinary shares against a base of 100 set on 12 February 1994. When it rises, the market as a whole — weighted by company size — went up.

How it is calculated

NEPSE index = Current total market capitalisation ÷ Base market capitalisation × 100

It is value-weighted: a big bank moves the index far more than a small microfinance. The base value is adjusted for new listings, rights and bonus so that those don't move the index by themselves.

Other NEPSE indices

  • Sensitive index — only Class A companies.
  • Float index — uses free-float (publicly held) shares instead of all shares.
  • Sub-indices — one per sector: Banking, Hydropower, Life Insurance, Microfinance and more.

What it tells you

A day's index change is the market's net move. Because promoter shares count at full market price, a few large companies can carry the index while most stocks fall — check breadth (advances vs declines) as well.

What does NEPSE stand for?

Nepal Stock Exchange Limited, the country's only stock exchange, which started floor trading in January 1994.

When does the NEPSE index update?

Continuously during trading, 11:00–15:00 Monday to Friday. Outside those hours it shows the last close.
